Tai Chi was originally developed in China as a martial art. It is now widely practiced as a mind-body approach to improve physical and mental well-being. Famous for its beautiful moves, Tai Chi is sometimes called moving meditation. Tai Chi courses teach about the practice of combining movement, rhythmic breathing and meditation.

Aesthetically pleasing, this form of exercise cultivates the life energy by fluid, controlled movements and breathing while practicing mindfulness. The ultimate goal of a Tai Chi course is to each about ways to stimulate the flow of energy in your body.

What to Wear

Wear stretchy clothing as movement and breathing is a main focus when learning and practising the art of Tai Chi. Wearing a t-shirt or tank top along with stretchy pants or shorts will be fine. Consider not wearing jewellery, watches or other accessories as they may interfere with your movement and concentration.

Your instructor may ask that you wear thin-soled shoes, so check any special considerations before you go to your first class. You may also have remove your shoes and socks, depending on the instructor.

What to Bring

You may need an exercise mat to use for some activities. Check any special considerations for the class regarding what to bring. You may also want a towel to dry off if you perspire easily.

Also, make sure to bring some water. Hydration is important to our bodies especially when we are doing physical activities as it lubricates your joints and helps regulate your body temperature. If you don’t drink enough water, you risk feeling tired or dizzy, having muscle cramps or other symptoms.

What to Expect in a Tai Chi class?

This art does not require strength, power or speed. It is low impact and generally appropriate for most fitness levels. However, to get the benefits, you will use techniques in movement, breathing and meditation.

Remember that everyone learns at their own pace and everyone attended their first class at one time. Do your best and know that you should see and feel improvement as the course progresses. Your instructors are understanding of individual needs, but it helps to know what to expect before attending your first class. Some points to help you get started:

  • At the beginning of class, you may perform stretching, relaxation techniques and connections within the body.
  • You may learn to understand the alignment of your body and connecting joints through various techniques such as the Neutral Position or Feet to Hips Alignment. Then, you may perform some simple moments to relax and open the body to help loosen your problem areas.
  • Learning basic moves such as Separate Clouds, Scoop the Sea and Rotate the Wheel are the first steps to cultivating the energy flow in your body, all while maintaining alignment.
  • To close out the class you may stand and practice feeling your energy. This may help you identify any tightness or blockages and relax, while still maintaining good alignment.
