In a revealing analysis timed with Engineers Week, irishtechnews.ie has reported on LinkedIn’s new data that sheds light on the priorities and trends shaping the Irish software sector. Derived from software engineers actively present on the professional networking platform, the insights offer a compelling look into what motivates Irish tech talent and the dynamics driving the industry’s talent pipeline.

Flexible Work Arrangements Top Priority for Software Engineers

The data reveals that Irish software engineers value flexible work arrangements above all else when considering new job opportunities. A staggering 69% of respondents ranked this factor as their biggest motivator for making a career move, surpassing even salary and benefits, which came in second at 61%. Closely following was a healthy work-life balance, flagged by 61% of participants, highlighting the growing importance of work-life integration in the tech workforce.

International Talent Influx Fuels Irish Software Sector

With demand for software engineers in Ireland outstripping supply, the country continues to attract a steady flow of international talent. LinkedIn’s analysis identified the top five sources of talent for the Irish software sector as India, the UK, Brazil, Turkey, and the Netherlands, respectively. This diverse talent pool not only addresses the sector’s resource needs but also contributes to the country’s rich cultural tapestry.

Addressing the Gender Divide: A Pressing Challenge

While the Irish software sector thrives, one issue that demands attention is the significant gender divide within the industry. According to LinkedIn’s data, a staggering 83% of software professionals in Ireland are male, with a mere 17% female representation. Digging deeper, the analysis reveals a potential glass ceiling, with women holding proportionally more junior roles. For instance, women’s share of non-leadership roles is notably higher than their overall representation, with 22% in Junior Software Engineer roles, 28% in Associate Software Engineer roles, and 30% in Software Engineer Intern positions.

Top Employers and Recruitment Hotspots

The analysis also shed light on the top employers in the Irish software sector, with Workday, Amazon Web Services, Ericsson, and Mastercard ranking among the top five. Over the past year, Workday, Mastercard, and Fidelity Investments recorded the highest levels of recruitment within the industry.

Homegrown Talent Pipeline: Irish Universities’ Contribution

Ireland’s third-level institutions play a crucial role in nurturing homegrown talent for the software sector. The largest provider of talent is the Technological University Dublin, followed by University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, and the University of Galway, respectively.

As the Irish software sector continues to thrive, these insights from LinkedIn offer a valuable perspective on the industry’s talent landscape, emerging priorities, and areas for improvement. By addressing challenges such as the gender divide and fostering an environment that prioritizes work-life balance and flexible work arrangements, Ireland can position itself as a premier destination for top software engineering talent, driving innovation and economic growth.
