Quantum physics, often referred to as quantum mechanics, is a fundamental theory in physics that describes the behavior of matter and energy at the smallest scales, where classical physics breaks down. In recent years, the principles of quantum mechanics have been harnessed to develop a range of transformative technologies with the potential to revolutionize fields such as computing, communication, and sensing.
The development of quantum technologies represents a frontier in science and engineering, with the potential to bring about transformative changes in various industries. While many quantum technologies are still in the early stages of development, ongoing research and advancements continue to unlock new possibilities for harnessing the unique properties of quantum mechanics.
Prof. Klaus Mølmer is giving a free public lecture on Quantum Physics & Technologies on Thursday, Aug 26th at 7pm.
No prior physics knowledge is needed, Prof. Klaus Mølmer will take you on a journey from fundamental physics right through the exciting new possibilities of the coming (second) quantum revolution!

Many fundamental theories of physics have later resulted in important technological revolutions e.g. engines and refrigerators from thermodynamics or modern electronics from electromagnetism. The seemingly exotic rules of quantum mechanics are providing remarkable new opportunities in this respect; recent decades have witnessed tremendous experimental progress in preparing systems which are so small and isolated that they can only be accurately described using quantum mechanics. Once questioned as the evidence of a potential fundamental flaw in the theory, quantum superposition and entanglement are now established physical phenomena and, remarkably, are ushering in a new wave of devices which utilise these distinctly quantum mechanical effects as resources. It is clear that the science underlying quantum enhanced devices is sufficiently mature that it is now making the transition from academic enterprise to commercialisation.

Prof. Klaus Mølmer

Klaus has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning almost 30 years. A prolific scientist, he has published more than 300 articles and serves on several editorial and advisory boards. He is a member Royal Danish Academy of Sciences & Letters and Fellow of the American Physical Society. Klaus has made seminal contributions in a wide variety of fields including: proposing a universal set of gates for quantum computation that can be realised using trapped ions, developing efficient tools for studying complex quantum dynamics, and devising hybrid quantum technologies involving storage of light or microwave photons in large atom or spin ensembles. He is a skilled speaker having delivered more than a hundred public lectures aimed at introducing the fascinating world of quantum physics and technology to non-experts.
