A report released by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) says Ireland’s Biopharma sector is poised to drive substantial job growth, predicting the creation of over 21,000 additional jobs by 2027.

However, amidst this promising outlook, the report also highlights critical challenges, notably a projected shortfall of 3,000 skilled workers. Addressing this gap demands a multifaceted approach, one that hinges on collaboration between industry stakeholders and the education and training sectors.

The findings and recommendations of the EGFSN report, makes it clear that nurturing Ireland’s Biopharma future requires concerted efforts to enhance STEM education, foster industry-academia collaboration, promote career pathways, and develop essential leadership and digital skills.

Rising Opportunities, Looming Challenges

Over the past five years, the Biopharma sector in Ireland has witnessed robust growth, a trend expected to persist with nearly 21,000 new job opportunities projected by 2027. However, this growth is accompanied by a pressing concern: a significant shortfall of skilled workers. With an average annual recruitment forecast exceeding 5,600, the sector faces a substantial gap between demand and the available talent pool. Factors such as evolving manufacturing technologies, digitalization, innovation imperatives, and regulatory compliance further underscore the urgency of addressing this skills deficit.

A Call for Collaboration and Innovation

The EGFSN report emphasizes the imperative for collaboration between industry players and educational institutions to bridge the skills gap effectively. It advocates for increased capacity building in tertiary education, aligning curriculum with industry needs, and fostering an environment of diversity and collaboration. By promoting STEM education in schools, facilitating new pathways into the sector, and enhancing digital and transversal skills, Ireland can cultivate a robust talent pipeline capable of meeting the Biopharma sector’s evolving demands.

Key Recommendations for Action

To navigate the complex landscape of skills development in the Biopharma sector, the EGFSN report lays out ten comprehensive recommendations. These encompass a spectrum of initiatives, including strengthening STEM education in schools, expanding tertiary education capacity, fostering industry-academia collaboration, and promoting career pathways. Additionally, the report emphasizes the importance of developing leadership skills, enhancing digital literacy, and fostering diversity within the sector. Accelerating the development of skills for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and establishing a cohesive skills framework are identified as critical steps towards ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness.

Charting a Path Forward

As Ireland’s Biopharma sector continues to evolve, the EGFSN report serves as a roadmap for stakeholders to navigate the complexities of skills development and talent acquisition. By embracing the recommendations outlined in the report and fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and lifelong learning, Ireland can position itself as a global leader in Biopharma innovation and talent development. Through strategic partnerships, targeted investments, and a commitment to excellence, Ireland can harness the full potential of its Biopharma sector, driving sustainable growth, prosperity, and societal advancement for years to come.
