How it works

If you have never done woodworking, you will probably want to start with an introduction to woodworking course. Here you will use basic tools, and you’ll have a guide to help you through that first project. If you have the basic skills, you may want to try your hand at making furniture. There are several woodwork courses that teach you the skills and allow opportunities to gain experience in those skills.

These courses understandably take a hands-on approach. From basic woodworking skills to drawing your idea and applying finishing techniques, there is something for everyone.

When enroling in woodwork courses, check the course details carefully. Many courses provide tools but require that you supply your own materials.

Beginners and Basic Woodworking

Here you learn the fundamentals of woodworking. You will learn how to plan your project and use the appropriate tools. You will also learn the techniques for measuring, cutting, joinery and finishing. Part of the fun in these courses is that you will make something in the sessions and take it home to show your accomplishment.

Furniture Making

These woodwork courses are for beginners and experienced woodworkers alike. You will design and build small projects that enhance your techniques such as material selection, milling, joining and finishing. Safety, of course, is always important. So expect some discussion about work area safety processes as well.

Marquetry and Veneer

Enhancing the look of furniture, small decorative pieces, even musical instruments is what marquetry is all about. You learn about designing the decorative component, choosing materials, and bringing that decorative touch to life. Basic history of this art and safety precautions are also part of these woodwork courses.

Woodcarving

Woodwork courses geared toward carving will introduce and expand on the fundamentals of woodcarving. Understanding and practising carving in the round and relief carving are main topics in these courses. You learn how to properly clamp wood and transfer designs to the piece. And also how to safely carve and chisel your design into the finished product.

Woodturning

Turning wood into functional pieces of art such as furniture legs, platters boxes are accomplished with woodturning. Turning is typically done with a lathe. The wood is placed on the lathe and you use tools to create your piece. Alternatively, the lathe itself is used to carve and you position the wood to create cuts for your project.
