Why study Patient Care?

Patient Care is not always something we may think of when considering further education. However, it’s an incredibly valuable and import field to be familiar with. Patient Care will not only improve you as a person but will also benefit the many people you’ll be working with and helping. As well as that, it’s an industry that will always have a demand for workers. It takes a certain type of person to master it, but for those who do, it’s like a vocation. There are many different routes you can take within this field depending on where your strengths and interests lie.

What will you study?

A course in Operating Department Care Skills will help you go on to further study in healthcare support. It covers the likes of safety and health, infection control, client care and clinical activity and communication. It will help you to understand both the physical and psychological needs of those you’re working with as well as how to deliver effective, safe and efficient care. 

However, you will also be taught how the importance of managing stock, keeping records and reporting incidents. This will be combined with other interpersonal skills and effective communication skills that will be covered in the course. Having this foundation of information will help you to progress with whatever career you end up in as they are skills that will stick with you as a person. 

Courses in Paramedic Recruitment will cover the likes of verbal and numeric reasoning, research and interviewing techniques and judgement questionnaires based on different scenarios. You will also need to fill in experience self-assessment and questionnaires about the subject. 

Most courses in this field will allow you to study at home at a time that suits you, which means that you can incorporate it into your work or pre-existing routines. Some have entry requirements such as having a Leaving Certificate or a Level 4 certificate. For work placements, Garda Vetting will be required. You will need to be familiar with computers and have basic IT skills as they are delivered online through distance learning. 

Career Paths

As mentioned previously, courses in Patient Care can lead you on to further studies. A part-time Paramedic Recruitment course will prepare you with the necessary skills and concepts that the selection panel are looking for. With this course, you’ll be able to impress the panel and move on to become a paramedic or follow whatever path you choose. 

Students who complete a course in Operative Department Care Skills will be able to go onto study Healthcare Support at Level 5. After this, you can move on to any course in the field that you’re interested in.

If you choose to go into Patient Care, you can work in a number of roles in health care. For example, a medical or nursing assistant, practical nurse, physician, therapist, pharmacy technician and many more. Each course you do is a stepping stone in your long and fulfilling career.
