What is Psychology?

Psychology is the study of human behaviour and mental processes. A psychology course will cover topics such as:

  • Infant and child development
  • Perception
  • Learning
  • Motivation
  • Cognitive processes (like memory and problem solving)
  • Individual differences
  • Social psychology

Is a psychology course the right course for you?

If you are a person that enjoys things like:

Trying to understand other people’s behaviour?

Trying to understand how the brain works?

Conducting your own research to answer questions?

Then studying a course in psychology could be the perfect way for you to begin your career or further study path.

Career opportunities

Students of psychology courses will usually progress to a career in professional psychology through professional training. There is also the option to specialise in specific areas of psychology in order to practice in those areas. Some of those specialised areas include:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Counselling Psychology
  • Applied Psychology
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Clinical Supervision

According to Caroline Kennedy, Careers & Opportunities Officer at NCI; “The psychology course has proven incredibly popular because of the sheer range of options that it opens up to graduates. The PSI accreditation means that graduates can pursue further professional training in any number of areas, depending on their particular interest – anything from clinical, educational to occupational psychology, and more. Not every graduate will go on to become a practising psychologist, but they will gain all manner of transferable skills and knowledge that will be attractive to any employer. With strong research and communication skills, and an understanding of why people act the way they do, graduates could end up working anywhere from marketing, management and HR, to sports or healthcare – it’s a degree that gives you a huge variety of options.”

Further study

Studying for a qualification in psychology also opens doors to further avenues of study to the student. Some of the further areas of study include

  • Organisational Psychology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Counselling Psychology

There are a large number of psychology courses available to learners across Ireland at the moment. Both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
