Modules

Week 1 – Understanding Terrorism and its Origins

Week 2 – Motivations – Making the Terrorist

Week 3 – Terrorist failures and successes (the evolving concept of the kidnap as a weapon)

Week 4 – Contemporary Threats (including threat assessment and who the main players are)

Week 5 – Reading the International Security Landscape (who does what and how they do it)

Week 6 – Countering Terror (methodology and case studies)

Week 7 – Understanding the role of intelligence in security application

Week 8 – The concepts of Situational Awareness and Acceptance in containing Terrorism

Week 9 – Response by the State to Terror and Threat (looking in particular at Irish responses and contributions)

Week 10 – Working and Travelling in the shadow of Terror (techniques, tradecraft and adaptable methodologies to stay safe)

Who should apply?

Those who wish to understand the root causes of terrorism and how to manage and contain it. While this may include career members of the security forces such as An Garda Siochana, the Defence Forces and the Prison Service, it will also be of relevance to business and humanitarian professionals whose work brings them to volatile regions.

This Diploma in Terrorism and International Security Studies course will also appeal to those involved in the local and national management of key states services and infrastructure. Those involved in policy creation for governmental and non-governmental organisations will also benefit.

Assessments / Exams

A pass grade on the written assignment will be required for awarding the Professional Diploma in Terrorism and International Security Studies.

The assignment/project must be handed in on the due date unless a sound reason for lateness is provided. In such instances, an extension may be awarded at the discretion of the lecturer.
