Level 9 Certificate in Innovative Materials for Industry 4.0 at IT Carlow/DCU

Institute of Technology Carlow has launched a new level 9 Certificate in Innovative Materials for Industry 4.0 in collaboration with DCU.

Materials professionals are in global demand by industry for their skills in combining innovative new materials with critical technological advances. The 30-credit course has been designed to link traditional and industry 4.0 technologies with materials selection and sustainability in design and manufacturing. It will be led Dr David Culliton from the Department of Aerospace, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering (AME) at IT Carlow in partnership with Professor Dermot Brabazon of DCU.


Institute of Technology Carlow runs part-time, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Carlow.

Dublin City University is renowned globally for its academic calibre.


Dr Cathal Nolan, Head of AME at IT Carlow said “The innovative structure of the programme is intended to broaden inclusion and benefit both students and employers in the region. They will profit from recent investment in industry standard research equipment”

Professor Dermot Brabazon of DCU said, “Manufacturing industry technologies have been developing quickly in recent years. We are delighted to partner on this programme with IT Carlow, which will help to bring the latest developments in materials processing and digitisation to employees within Irish industry. We expect the new virtual and augmented reality training elements within this programme will be particularly engaging and for the participants”.

Barry Lowe, Engineering Manager, Lufthansa Techik welcomed the course. He said, “The aerospace industry has seen the introduction of new technologies such as metal additive manufacturing, plasma and HVOF processes. Therefore, it is important for us to have training courses available to help keep our staff up to date with the latest state-of-the-art technologies that will be deployed for future product development”.

Level 9 Certificate in Innovative Materials for Industry 4.0 at IT Carlow/DCU

The certificate programme will be delivered in four-week module units that can be applied for as standalone qualifications. Programme content and project work will be online via extended/virtual reality, interactive video and blended learning in a virtual learning environment.

Candidates that have completed the four technical modules on this programme can apply for the Master of Science in Engineering Research and Innovation, where the modules will be recognised as prior learning.
