For many professionals working in supply chain and logistics, career progression can often feel tied to experience alone. But for one industry professional working in pharmaceutical logistics, taking the step into formal education became the catalyst for far greater opportunities.

Before enrolling on the Year One Certificate in Sustainable Supply Chains and Logistics, Michael was working as a logistics technician in an environment that was constantly evolving. While he had developed strong operational experience, he recognised that advancing further would require a broader understanding of how the business operated as a whole.

“The goal was to make myself more employable and to understand the industry I was working in.”

What attracted him to the programme was its breadth. Covering topics ranging from sustainable supply chains and logistics operations to finance, customs awareness and business performance, the course offered practical knowledge that connected directly to day-to-day responsibilities.

One of the biggest revelations came through the finance module.

Understanding how company profitability links to performance metrics changed the way they approached logistics decisions and highlighted opportunities for cost savings that may otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Beyond finance, the programme introduced practical tools and concepts that could be applied immediately in the workplace, including lean principles, customs processes and logistics solutions. More importantly, it created a much deeper understanding of how different business functions connect and how stronger cross-functional collaboration drives results.

Balancing study alongside a full-time role and family life was initially challenging.

“With children, a full-time job and college, it was difficult at first. But after a few weeks it became part of my routine.”

That experience has shaped the advice they now give to others considering returning to education later in their careers: invest in yourself and trust that you can adapt.

The impact extended far beyond gaining a qualification. Shortly after completing the programme, he secured a promotion — something he attributes not only to the qualification itself but to the confidence and practical capability developed through the learning experience.

Industry-led teaching played an important role too. Access to lecturers with real-world experience brought credibility and relevance to the course, while practical guidance helped bridge the gap between education and career development.

That momentum didn’t stop there.

Completing the programme inspired a continued education journey, leading to a Higher Diploma in Supply Chain Management and ultimately a Master’s degree.

Reflecting on the experience now, Michael describes enrolling as one of the best decisions he has ever made.

The biggest benefit?

“It gave me confidence, opportunities, and a real sense of personal achievement.”

For professionals with years of experience but no formal qualification, the message is simple: take the leap. Investing in yourself can open doors you never expected.
