The CAO Change of Mind deadline is just around the corner. In the ordinary run of events finalising your CAO choices can be difficult, particularly, when you consider the number and range of programmes on offer. The COVID-19pandemic has added an additional layer of complexity to the process. If, however, you’re looking for a career focused degree, a vibrant student scene and a supportive learning environment look no further than Mary Immaculate College (MIC).

Considering Mary Immaculate College?

According to Dr Geraldine Brosnan, Director of Student Life at MIC; “The College prides itself on our high-quality student experience on both our MIC Limerick and MIC Thurles campuses. This, of course, will take a different form for incoming students as a result of the COVID-19 crisis but nonetheless MIC intends to deploy its extensive student support services to ensure new students have the best possible college experience. Part of our mission and vision is to create a community of scholars where staff and students work together and our aim is to provide services, activities, and resources that maintain the College’s educational enterprise while also supporting our students personally as they learn, grow, and change through their time at MIC”.

So, if you want a degree that offers a choice of subjects, and multiple career options, the four-year Bachelor of Arts programme, which has been running for over 25 years, is for you. With 13 subjects to choose from this programme will allow you to follow an existing area of interest or discover a new one.  Subjects on offer include Psychology, Media & Communication Studies, History, German Studies, and Theology & Religious Studies.

A Range of Courses on Offer

The  innovative BA in Contemporary and Applied Theatre Studies offers a mix of academic and practical learning with students having access to the beautiful 500-seater Lime Tree Theatre situated on the MIC Limerick campus.  Launched in 2015, it is the first programme of its type in Ireland and gives students a round and broadly-based education in drama and theatre, and a specific set of skills in the contemporary and applied aspects of the field.

MIC’s BA in Early Childhood Care and Education is an exciting and challenging programme for those interested in working with young children.  It provides excellent training and a highly-regarded qualification in this most rewarding area, and was developed in response to contemporary developments in the field of early years education both in Ireland and internationally.

The College also offers a range of programmes in primary and post-primary school teaching. Two new programmes have been added to the MIC 2020 offering which are the Bachelor of Education – International (MI004) at MIC Limerick and the Bachelor in Education, Mathematics and Business Studies (MI014) at MIC Thurles.

Speaking about the calibre of the programmes on offer at MIC Thurles, Dr Finn Ó Murchú, Head of School of Education (Post-Primarynoted, “We have a wonderful teacher preparation programme here in MIC Thurles, which is built on promoting a caring learning environment that fosters students’ talents and goals by ensuring high quality teaching, learning and assessment experiences. The success of our approach is evidenced by the recent statistics that show approximately 90% of MIC Thurles graduates successfully secured teaching positions within the first year following graduation.”

How to Apply

Those thinking of applying to MIC should also note that each year MIC awards 50 Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships, valued at €2,000 each, on the basis of results obtained in the Irish Leaving Certificate Examination.
