Meet William Burke, whose lifelong learning journey brought him to take the Certificate in Lean Six Sigma Green Belt at DkIT.
At Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), education is about more than just a qualification; it’s about providing practical, life-changing skills that empower professionals to advance their careers. This is perfectly demonstrated by the journey of William Burke, a DkIT graduate who used the Certificate in Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt) to drive significant improvements in his work and career.
From Carpenter to Cluster General Manager
William’s story is a powerful example of the value of lifelong learning. He began his professional life as a carpenter but, during a recession, successfully transitioned into the hospitality industry. Through continuous upskilling, he rose through the ranks to become the Cluster General Manager for two hotels in Dundalk: the Fairways and Gateway.
Despite his senior position, William recognised the need to address modern business challenges, particularly the rising costs of energy and wages in the hospitality sector. He understood that to make his businesses more competitive and profitable, he needed to find new ways to improve efficiency. This led him to the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course at DkIT.
A Flexible Course for a Busy Professional
One of the key reasons William chose DkIT was the flexibility of the part-time course. With a new baby at home and the demanding role of managing two hotels, a flexible learning format was essential. The 12-week programme, requiring just three hours one evening per week, proved to be an achievable and effective time commitment. He also praised his tutor, Darren, for his industry knowledge and the valuable in-person, classroom setting that fostered lively discussions and a supportive learning environment with other participants.
Applying Lean Principles for Real-World Impact
The course was an “eye-opening” experience for William. He learned to identify and eliminate waste, a core principle of Lean Six Sigma. He now applies these skills daily to make hotel operations leaner and more sustainable, from optimising the use of lights and air conditioning to streamlining overall processes. This approach not only reduces costs but also improves the efficiency and quality of service, creating a more sustainable business model.
William highly recommends the Certificate in Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt) course to both employers and employees alike. It offers a new perspective on business operations and provides the tools to drive meaningful, positive change.
