Young Irish Students Performing Well in Science & Maths

TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is one of the world’s largest studies in education. The study, which is a project of the International Association for the Evaluation of EducationalvAchievement (IEA), began in 1995 and takes place every four years. It assesses the mathematical and scientific skills of young students – Fourth Class and Second Year in Ireland.

In Ireland, 150 primary and 149 post-primary schools took part in the study in March and April 2019. In total, over 8,500 students took part in TIMSS 2019 in Ireland.

This report presents the initial findings for Ireland from TIMSS 2019.

Young Irish Students Performing Well in Science & Maths

Some findings:

• Ireland is the top performing EU country in Mathematics at both fourth class in primary and second year in post-primary.

• The performance in Science at fourth class and second year is significantly above the TIMSS centre point

• The performance of Irish students in Mathematics and Science has remained stable and strong over the last four years

• Boys and girls at fourth class and second year performed equally well in Mathematics and Science tests
