QQI Level 7 Certificate in Local History with Maynooth University

This NUI Certificate in Local History is offered by the Department of History, Maynooth University. The course examines the ‘local dimension of Ireland’s past’. It aims to provide participants interested in local history with an opportunity to obtain formal training in the subject. This course sets out to provide students with a methodological approach to the research and writing of local history.

Entry Requirements:

Participants need to be 21 years of age or over on 1st January of the year in which the course commences. As courses are delivered in keeping with adult education practice, participants will be expected to: be willing to engage with group activities and group learning; be willing to learn through dialogue and reflection on experience; have a level of literacy that is sufficient to complete the assessment requirements.

Course Duration: The duration of the course is 100 hours. Students will attend 1 evening per week. Students will also attend 3/4 Saturdays over the duration of the course.

Cost: €1400.

Course Module Details:

Module 1

An introduction to academic and community-based local history in Ireland; Comparative traditions in other countries; Contemporary developments and challenges in the field of local history

Module 2

Introduction to primary and secondary sources; Guidelines for critical appraisal of sources;

Guidance on location and consultation of selected major sources

Module 3

Presenting Local History: Writing conventions; Oral/visual presentations; Fieldwork
