Professional Training for Live Studio Broadcasts
This intensive 3-week course includes a one-week work placement in the fast-paced studios of either Virgin Media Television or RTÉ. The course will provide an opportunity to develop your own abilities and gain new, unique skills in live studio broadcast production. You will collaborate with professionals of all levels to create a studio programme for any audience, broadcaster or platform.
The industry has seen a huge jump in multi-camera production. The course will be of interest to graduates and working professionals in film and media with an interest in TV production.
The course offers 18 places, with 3 places in each of the following areas: Lighting Operator (including vision control), Studio Camera Operator, Vision-mixer, Sound Operator, Floor Manager, Production Assistant.
Learn how to work in specific production roles in a studio programme to Irish and European broadcast standards, from active practitioners and practice in industry standard facilities at the National Film School at IADT.
What you learn is built on three strands: Content Creation | Production Operations | Technical Competencies. These include the technical competencies required including audio, lighting, camera operation, vision mixing and production assistance, in a full professional HD broadcast gallery and related technical equipment.
The work placement in Virgin Media Television and/or RTÉ will be focussed on live studio production with hands on learning in a live gallery environment.
The course is offered in IADT as part of the Creative Futures Academy (CFA) – an initiative of Ireland’s three leading Higher Education providers of cultural and creative education (IADT, NCAD and UCD), funded by the Higher Education Authority’s Human Capital Initiative.
The CFA supports the early and mid-career needs of creative professionals by offering credited NFQ courses / modules to people working in the creative sector. By offering learners the opportunity to skill, upskill and reskill, the CFA supports the professional growth, reach and impact of the creative and cultural sectors.

Entry Requirements | This course is aimed primarily at existing freelance professionals working in the broadcast industries who are interested in upskilling and/or reskilling in one of these key areas: Studio Camera Lighting Operator; Sound Operator; Gallery Production Assistant; Vision-mixing. Entry requirements include an undergraduate qualification of 2nd Class Honours or higher at Honours Degree level (Level 8). Applicants without a Level 8 qualification who have relevant professional experience may be considered through our RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process. Eligible freelance professionals will be prioritised for this course, but there may be limited availability for currently employed broadcast professionals already working in full-time positions. Freelance professionals may be eligible for partial funding support. As part of your application we require: - A recent CV including an introductory statement outlining your interest in the course and clearly stating your desired pathway (in order of preference) for Studio Camera Lighting Operator; Sound Operator; Gallery Production Assistant; Vision-mixing. - A digital portfolio of your work. - One Reference. Carear Path | A variety of professional pathways exist in the audio-visual, web and screen industries. You may want to work as online content providers in the broadcast media, advertisement agencies, production facilities, company in-house production facilities, state and civil society bodies, and indeed any group involved in the creation and distribution of audio-visual content. The course will enable you to incorporate your skills into your production practices and future professional roles, and give you real-life experience in a professional working environment.
