Throughout this course, you will...
  • Identify issues arising from the language and stereotyping used in relation to people with disabilities

  • List five valued experiences used to evaluate the quality of support provided to individuals with a disability

  • Define the concept of a socially valued role

  • Describe how working from a clear value base and a person-centred philosophy positively impacts people receiving support

  • Define the medical model and social model of support

  • Outline the principles of a person-centred approach to disability

  • Outline the key elements of effective communication skills

  • Adopt and consistently use people-first language in work practice

  • Work with a person-centred focus to empower individuals with disabilities to make informed decisions about their day-to-day lives

  • Examine their role as an advocate for individuals with disabilities

  • Explore and recognise the capacities, strengths, and uniqueness of each individual

  • Apply person-centred principles in day-to-day practice when supporting individuals with disabilities

  • Demonstrate essential active listening skills when working with people with disabilities

  • Demonstrate flexibility and creativity in meeting the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities

  • Compare the medical and social models of service delivery using examples from relevant work experience

  • Discuss the concept of inclusion and its importance in the lives of people with disabilities

  • Discuss the importance of socially valued roles for individuals with disabilities

  • Analyse the differences between an individualised approach and approaches that treat people with disabilities as a homogeneous group

  • Recognise and respect service users’ diversity, including cultural and ethnic needs, while maintaining professional and respectful relationships within a person-centred focus

  • Discuss the challenges of working in a person-centred way that empowers individuals to make informed choices and decisions

They also offer additional education and learning activities, assessment support, opportunities to submit drafts, and meetings before or after class to answer queries that cannot be covered in the session (by appointment).

You may also be eligible if you have relevant life and work experience, in this case you may need to speak to the tutor and discuss your previous work experience or furnish the tutor with a CV and work references.
Career PathThis course leads to an award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Intellectual Disability Practice.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.
