The Health Care Services certificate with an emphasis on Occupational Therapy assistant provides training for Care Assistants and Occupational Therapy assistants and equips them with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. Students gain a knowledge of the theory and principles of occupational therapy practice, and of the role of the occupational therapy assistant in the implementation of therapeutic programmes. Students learn about human occupation, growth and development and become familiar with the elements of activities of living. They develop the skills and techniques to assist a patient/client in the activities of living in order to enhance their quality of life. The Occupational Therapy Assistant also learns the basic principles of infection control and are taught to apply standard precautions in relation to infection control.

Occupational therapists help people who have problems with their physical or mental health. Their aim is to maximise their clients independence at home and with their working and social lives. They assess needs, and plan and carry out activities that help people to look after themselves.

This QQI level 5 course has been specifically designed for delivery by blended learning. You will need to attend 11 scheduled workshops which will aid your studies. It is very suited to you if you are working full-time with limited spare time, yet you want to achieve your degree qualification. During the induction workshop, you will be given your log-in details to the online portal. Here you will find course notes, reading lists, podcasts, articles of interest and assessment guidelines. The content is structured in an easy to “find and follow” week by week format. You will need basic computer skills such as searching the internet and typing a word document.

Each module commences with an induction seminar and you will meet your lead tutor during this seminar. You can upload your assessments and your tutor will give you feedback on whether you are on the right track before you submit the final version. Blended learning allows you to study at your time with support available throughout your learning journey.
