Course Content

Programme structure and approach to learning

The AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024 and is the first comprehensive regulation on AI. It will be fully applicable on 2 August 2026. This course provides an exploration of the AI Act, how it will impact organisations and how legislation can stay up to date in this constantly changing environment.

In this Micro-credential, participants will be brought through the latest thinking and legal updates in relation to AI, key upcoming dates and how to consider this from both an Irish and an international perspective. This course will ensure that participants have an overview of the current position of AI within organisations and are equipped to deal with the forthcoming legislative obligations as they arise. It would also include a practical session on using AI.

Modules

The programme covers key themes as listed below:

Module 1: Introduction to AI - Fundamentals and Key Concepts

  • What is AI?
  • Types of AI and Current Trends - An explanation of the various types and categories of AI, including machine learning, deep learning and AI models
  • The EU AI Act – Key provisions relating to deployers and providers
  • Understanding AI Literacy – Explaining AI literacy and how to build an AI literacy framework for your organisation

Module 2: The AI Landscape - Regulation, Policy and AI Literacy

  • AI Ethics - Ethical Principles for AI
  • AI Regulation in Ireland
  • Global Perspectives - Global Perspectives – UK, US and Beyond
  • AI and safeguarding children

Module 3: AI Tools and Prompting Best Practices

  • Overview of AI Tools - Public vs Private, Types of AI tools
  • Prompting fundamentals – Prompting frameworks and a live demonstration

Module 4: Data Protection, Privacy, and Security Considerations

  • AI and GDPR Compliance
  • AI and cybersecurity
  • Intellectual Property Challenges in AI

Module 5: AI in the Workplace – Employment Law and Future of Work

  • How AI is currently being adopted, the changing workforce and skills needed, job transformation and using AI for HR management
  • AI and employment - Employee Consultation, Duty to Re-Skill, AI decision making
  • Preparing for the future of work with AI
  • AI and learning and development

Module 6: Implementing AI in Your Organisation: Strategy, Integration and Risk Management

  • Use cases
  • Identifying AI Opportunities and Use Cases

  • Risk mitigation

Module 6A: AI in the Legal Profession

  • AI in the Law Firm
  • AI in litigation - How the courts are using AI and recent Irish case law
  • General Purpose AI tools vs Legal AI Tools

Module 7: Workshop

  • A live practical workshop building on earlier demonstrations and examples
  • Panel Session discussion

Workshops

Workshops are a key feature of this course. These are designed to be interactive and involve working in groups on selected case-study problems and analysis, with an emphasis on the application of the law to common scenarios encountered in practice. Workshop dates are as follows

  1. Workshop 1: Date TBC, 6 - 7pm
  2. Workshop 2: Date TBC, 7 - 8pm

Assessments

1,500-2,000 word written assignment (60%) and continuous assessment (including multiple-choice questions) (40%).
