Course Content

Overview

This sixteen-lecture series explores the people, ideas, and institutions behind imperial expansion, from ancient Greece and Rome to today’s global powers. Blending history, classics, and art history, it brings to life those who imagined, justified, and pursued conquest, examining how ambition, violence, and strategy shaped world orders. The course also investigates the cultural tools of empire—citizenship, law, architecture, and urban design—as instruments of power and control. Through focused case studies, it traces the lasting legacies of empire, exploring how they continue to shape the modern world and how they are remembered, reinterpreted, and challenged through art and other media.
