Course Description
Master of Science in Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is about harnessing the power of computers to advance knowledge in the biological and biomedical sciences. This programme will meet the rapidly growing demand for biologists with programming and data analytics skills. Students will graduate with competencies in biological data acquisition, management, analysis, and interpretation. No prior programming or data analytics training is required. Flexibility provided by the online and evening delivery of the programme content will enable those in full time employment to complete the course. The programme focuses on developing computer programming competencies in students with no prior background in computer science. These learnings are enriched with extensive applied bioinformatics training using real world data to ensure that graduates are workplace ready. In addition, the programme will equip graduates with the necessary foundational knowledge and programming know-how to keep pace with the rapidly evolving disciplines of bioinformatics and computational biology.Interested in learning more about what to expect in this programme? Here is a preview of some of the course content that will be covered hereYou may also be interested inATU & Randox Laboratories Bioinformatics Webinar:

| Entry Requirements | Applicants require a 2.2 Honours Degree in a relevant medical or life sciences subject (e.g., Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioanalytical Science, Nutrition, Biochemistry) or in a discipline with a significant element of Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science. Candidates who do not have an Honours degree but have significant relevant experience may also be eligible for consideration via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). |
| Career Path | This programme will appeal to students with a background and training in the biological sciences, including but not limited to genetics, bioanalytical science, biochemistry, or molecular biology. It will be of particular interest to students who wish to develop programming skills and combine them with existing molecular biology skills, and to learn to apply this knowledge in a wide variety of sectors that deal with large databases. Computational Sciences graduates will also be interested in the programme and can extend their existing programming knowledge for application in the specialised Bioinformatics domain. The programme will also be of relevance to anyone who currently works within an organisation in the life sciences, (bio)pharmaceutical, or medical sciences sector. |
