Introduction to Roman History



Introduction to Roman History is a course run by Trinity College Dublin, Dublin. This lecture-only module, led by Dr Rebecca Usherwood, provides an introductory survey of the history of the Greek and Roman world, from the Greek Archaic age (around 700 BC) to the death of Augustus in 14 AD. The main trends and issues of this period will be explored including colonisation, imperialism, war, the Athenian invention of democracy, the rise of Alexander, and the emergence of Rome as a major power in the Mediterranean. There will also be discussion of the main historical sources.

Rebecca has worked as a Teaching Fellow at University College London, a Teaching Associate at the University of Nottingham, a Lecturer in Roman History at Durham University, and a Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of St Andrews, as well as Trinity. Her research focuses on the political and cultural history of the Roman and later Roman Empire, especially the third and fourth centuries AD.
