English Literature Appreciation: 2019/2020
Tutor: Stephen O’Kane BA (Hons), DipM
This popular course offers a friendly, relaxed and stimulating journey through some great works of
literature. It can best be described as a teacher led, student centered book club. The tutor tends to
put forward lots of ideas about a text when introducing it and the class members are sufficiently
enthused to read the works critically and share their own research and ideas with the group.
In the Autumn term we will read three classic 19th century texts, namely:

1)Pride and Prejudice – by Jane Austen
2)Wuthering Heights – by Emily Brontë
3)Jane Eyre – by Charlotte Brontë

After Christmas, in the Spring of 2020 we will read the following:
The Diary of a Young Girl – By Anne Frank
Oranges are Not the Only Fruit – by Jeanette Winterson
And… a selection of short stories by various writers, including Alice Munro, Charles Dickens, Ernest
Hemingway, Roald Dahl and Elizabeth Bowen. These short stories will be available in electronic form
although the tutor will provide paper copies if required.

The literature appreciation course has been running for many years. It has a loyal following but new
students are always particularly welcome.
