Discover a Family's Story — and Build the Skills to Tell It

Autumn 2026 marks the launch of an exciting new Diploma in Family History Research, delivered by City College Dublin in collaboration with Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI).

Designed for those with a serious interest in Irish genealogical research—whether you're an enthusiastic family historian or considering a future career in genealogy—this comprehensive two-term programme combines academic knowledge with practical research experience.

Students benefit from a dynamic blend of:

  • Live online lectures
  • Interactive workshops
  • Practical research assignments
  • Real-life case studies
  • Guided repository visits (or online alternatives where appropriate)

Each term also includes a specialist guest lecture on DNA and Genetic Genealogy, providing valuable insight into modern family history research techniques.

The programme runs over two 10-week terms, with one three-hour live online class each week, offering flexibility while maintaining academic depth.

Assessment

Assessment is designed to develop practical research skills alongside professional report-writing.

During the programme, students complete:

  • Four short assignments each term
  • A Reflective Research Journal (Term 1)
  • A substantial 5,000-word genealogical research report (Term 2) based on a family of the student's choosing

This assessment structure allows learners to gradually build confidence while applying the research methods taught throughout the course.

Who Should Attend?

This diploma is ideal for:

  • Family historians wishing to research their own ancestry
  • Individuals looking to develop advanced genealogical research skills
  • Those considering a professional career in genealogy
  • Anyone interested in Irish historical records and archival research

Whether you're tracing your own family roots or preparing to help others uncover theirs, this diploma provides the knowledge, practical skills, and expert guidance to take your genealogical research to the next level.
