Course Overview

City Colleges are excited to announce our Diploma in Commercial Photography. Catering to beginners, this new course will provide a solid foundation in the practical and creative aspects of commercial photography, both as a service for businesses, and as a business in itself.
Covering a broad range of topics, from the beginnings of commercial photography through to its contemporary iterations, this course will give students an in-depth understanding of the aesthetics and techniques required to produce impactful commercial imagery.
From the outset, students will be encouraged to develop their creative and improvisational skills through in class workshops and follow on home assignments with an emphasis on composition, lighting and most importantly, thinking outside the box.

Who Should Apply:
Commercial photography is its own category that requires a unique set of skills.
This introductory course is tailored to aspiring photographers and small business owners wishing to optimise their use of images online and in general.
In a series of workshops and assignments, designed to deliver the most value to students, the fundamentals of exposure, lighting and composition will be explored. Through relevant examples and real-world case studies, students will be introduced to the numerous applications for commercial photography.

Entry Requirements:
Students will need a DSLR or Mirrorless camera, a laptop with Adobe Photoshop and of course a keen eye!
Students should be able to purchase student subscription rates for the latest Adobe software, see below, (otherwise a recent version will be fine.)

You will also need a Tripod for this course (reasonable models can be purchased for approximately €50)

Attendance and Assessment:
A ‘Pass’ grade on both the digital assignments and in-class participation is required to achieve the Diploma. A ‘Fail’ grade will result in a Certificate of Attendance for the course but without the Diploma being awarded.
Students must attend at least 8 of the 10 course evenings to graduate with either the Diploma or Certificate of Attendance unless a serious and verifiable reason for further absence is provided. Projects must be uploaded on the due date unless a good reason is provided. In such instances, an extension may be allowed at the discretion of the lecturer.
Digital Assessment:
It is important that assignments are correctly formatted, captioned and submitted on time via email. Exceptions will only be permitted as stipulated above.
