Course Outline

The Dublinia Cultural and Heritage programme, delivered in collaboration with the City of Dublin Education Training Board (CDETB,) is a QQI Level 5 Major award. The programme combines training and work experience over 11 months. There are nine certified modules including; History, Archaeology and Heritage. Participants benefit from familiarisation trips to other heritage sites around Ireland, work experience in Dublinia Heritage Centre, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and a site of the learners choice.

Course Aims & Content

• To enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in a range of core disciplines in Irish culture and heritage studies.
• To work independently under supervision in a range of cultural and heritage contexts and to progress to further or higher education and training.
• To demonstrate a broad range of knowledge in the disciplines of Archaeology, Folklore and Ethnology, History, the arts and other areas of study relevant to Irish Culture and Heritage.
• To apply the skills and tools of research, interpretation and presentation implicit in the study of Irish culture and heritage.
• To demonstrate personal appreciation and critical awareness of new learning in the areas of cultural and heritage studies.
• To engage positively with others, apply a broad range of verbal and non-verbal communication skill in the managed learning environment and/or the learner’s individual work experience situation.
• Certified Modules: Local History, Heritage, Folklore and Ethnology, Appreciation of Irish Culture, Work Experience, Archaeology, Communications, Customer Service, First Aid and Manual Handling.

Work Experience:

A period of work experience in the heritage sector is included in this course and is organised by Dublinia. Some weekends and bank holidays are required during work experience. This internship is a valuable part of the course and aids our graduates in finding further employment in the heritage sector.

Entry RequirementsThe 2022 course may be delivered through blended learning so computer literacy is desirable. No formal IT training is given as part of this course. A minimum of a QQI level 4 Major Award or its equivalent. 18 years or over. Fluent English both oral and written. Suitable candidates will be required to successfully complete and pass the interview process.
Carear PathThis course will be of interest to anyone wanting to work in the tourism or heritage industries in Ireland or to go on to further study at university level. Past learners have achieved employment with Dublinia Heritage Centre, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Glasnevin Cemetery, the Guinness Storehouse, Malahide Castle and Farmleigh House among other prominent historical sites. This course can also be used to gain points to apply to some Irish universities.
