Is your mind brimming with story ideas most suited to the shorter form? Do you feel the urge to write using the form mastered by writers such as Frank O’Connor, Anton Chekhov, Alice Munro, Raymond Carver, Lorrie Moore, and George Saunders? If so, this exciting course is for you. Over the space of eight weeks, you will read and discuss short stories from a diverse range of writers and regularly engage in fun writing exercises that will prepare you for your journey as a short story writer. Each week will be dedicated to a different aspect of the short story form, including: structure/style, plot, scene-setting, themes, voice, characterisation, dialogue, and conclusions. Designed for beginner writers, this course will expand your knowledge of the art of the short story and provide you with the narrative tools needed to start writing stories of your own. Mark Kelleher is a teacher and writer from Cork. He holds a BA in English and Psychology and an MA in Creative Writing from UCC. Mark has spent the last 5 years pursuing a PhD in DCU’s School of English and is currently editing his thesis, the focus of which is the literary crafting of human isolation using experimental techniques. In addition to being a writer of short stories and creative non-fiction, Mark has extensive experience in teaching both literature and creative writing. For three years, he was an English literature tutor in DCU. Mark regularly works as a creative writing tutor for DCU’s Age-Friendly Network, teaching diverse forms of life-writing to mature learners, and he has also facilitated creative writing courses for the Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education Training Board.
