In 2003, there were approximately 6.3 billion people living on the planet and 500 million Internet connected devices. By 2020 there will be 50 billion connected devices. Known as the Internet of Things (IoT), everything that can benefit from a network connection will have one.

In the IoT environment your phone will control your world. Late home from work, your phone will turn on the heating, check the fridge and choose a recipe based on those ingredients. It may tell you what additional ingredients you need and where you can find them. When you arrive home, your phone will automatically unlock your door, turn on the lights and suggest a route for that run you were planning.

Today the app economy in Europe employs 1.8 million people. It is estimated that 94.4 billion apps were downloaded globally last year. By 2018 connected device control will be an integral part of mobile App development.

The aim of this exciting new degree is to provide a multidisciplinary undergraduate education by developing specific expertise and comprehensive training in the key areas relevant to the emerging Internet of Things; software development/engineering, mobile application development and connected device programming. The goal is to produce qualified and well-rounded graduates capable of working in a range of IT positions such as Internet of Things mobile app developers, programmers, system integrators and system validators.
