The benefits of higher education
Higher education or 3rd Level as it is often referred to can boost your future earnings and chances of getting the career you want, while you immerse yourself in subjects and activities that interest you.
Higher education isn't just another word for university. It’s about furthering your education, learning new things, being in charge of your choices and getting to where you want to be in the future - whatever stage you're at, whatever age you are. Education in Ireland is changing with more and more mature student applications each year. So age is now no barrier to gaining that qualification.
You can take a higher education course at a university, Institues of Technology or private further education colleges.
Although the Leaving Certificate and other academic qualifications are frequently a route into higher education, they’re not the only way. Work-related qualifications and work experience can also provide a good starting point.
Attending university or college lets you experience a rich cultural
and social scene and meet a variety of people, while studying something you love. Many of the friendships formed last for life.
Going into higher education can also lead to:
- a better paid job
- a greater choice of job
- higher future earning
Employers value graduates’ skills and completing 3rd level education
does lead to better pay, often in a job that fits your career plans.
Whatever your reasons for thinking about 3rd level, talk them over with your friends, parents or teachers, and do a bit of research into your career options.
You may also want to hear about the experiences of those currently at a university or college before you decide.
Even if no one else you know is thinking about going into higher education it may be the right choice for you. |
