The Norwegian Government Scholarship Pool 2007/2008
The Government of Norway, through the International Scholarship Section (IS) offers a pool of scholarships for advanced students and young researchers.
The scholarships are open to all areas of studies and research within academic fields, including applied and performing arts. Irish students are eligible to apply.
The following terms apply:-
- The applicants are required to hold a Bachelor degree or equivalent (minimum requirement) and
- there is an age limit ? candidates must be no older than 40 years.

Completed forms and enclosures (which must be authorised copies) should be returned to the Department of Education & Science, International Section, Training College Building, Marlborough St., Dublin 1, no later than 5 p.m., Friday 15 December 2006. Late applications will not be considered.

The scholarships are open to all areas of academic studies and research, including applied and performing arts and are valid at accredited Norwegian universities, research institutes, university colleges and other institutions at university level. |

The scholarships are intended to support a temporary stay in Norway of up to one academic year (10 months). Foreign citizens who study/intend to study for a Master's degree (first or second year/part of) in Norway, are not eligible. Foreign citizens who have been living and/or studying in Norway for a long period of time are not given priority under the scheme. Finally, foreign citizens who reside in Norway on a permanent basis are excluded from this scheme.

Requirements |
Applicants are required to:
• Minimum have completed three years of higher education prior to coming to Norway
• Maximum be 40 years old
• Describe in detail the purpose of the planned study/research stay in Norway
• Enclose a letter of invitation from/on behalf of a member of the scientific staff of a Norwegian

• Have a good working knowledge of English or Norwegian (Danish/Swedish)
• Focus the professional programme around one host institution. |
Duration |
Scholarships can be granted from one (1) to ten (10) months in the academic year. The autumn term
runs from mid August to mid December and the spring term from mid January to mid June. Requests
for an extension of the scholarship will be regarded as a new application and must be directed through
the home country authorities by the next application deadline. |
Value |
The scholarships are intended to cover all basic needs while in Norway. Scholarship rates are:
NOK 8,500 (~ € 1,000) per month for candidates who hold Bachelor's or Master's degrees.
NOK 11,500 (~ € 1,400) per month for candidates who are PhD students or are post docs.
In addition, each category will receive NOK 7,000 (~ € 900) the first month to cover initial expenses.
Scholarship holders will be able to rent reasonably priced rooms at halls of residence. |
Selection of candidates |
The selection of candidates is carried out by the relevant scholarship authorities in the home country of
the applicant. Selection procedure and requirements therefore vary from country to country. Specific
information can be obtained from the home country scholarship authorities. (A list of relevant
scholarship authorities can be found at: www.rcn.no/is) The scholarship authorities of the cooperating
countries are invited to present applications for up to 15 candidates. All applications must
have been evaluated by and forwarded to the International Scholarship Section (IS) by the home
country scholarship authorities.The IS is not in a position to consider applications not sent through
home country authorities. |
Application procedure |
The national deadline is normally during the autumn of the previous year, i.e. the autumn 2006. A
special application form must be used. The application form and all attachments must be filled in, or
translated into, English or Norwegian (Danish/Swedish). The form can be obtained from national
scholarship authorities, Norwegian Embassies, or from the IS directly. The nomination deadline to the
IS by the home country authorities is 1 February 2007. The applications are assessed by the IS
Programme Committee. Normally approximately 100 scholarships are awarded. The outcome of the
evaluation will be announced to the candidates no later than May 2007. |
